The HOME advantage: How Mapúa’s Accessible SHS Education positions the youth ahead for college

Imagine if you lived hundreds of miles away from school and had no means to travel or relocate for your studies. What if your schedule and responsibilities prevented you from attending traditional school? What if your parents wanted to maximize your learning with personalized instruction? These are just some of the scenarios that Mapúa Senior High School addresses with their HOME (Homeschool: Onboard to Modern day Education) Program.

Known for its legacy of excellence in education, Mapúa Senior High School (SHS) understands the evolving needs of learners today. To help ensure that no student is left behind, Mapúa SHS introduced HOME in 2022. It was initially launched as an educational program during the pandemic to help students continue their studies off-site through flexible learning options. The HOME program also assured accessibility for students who had mobility challenges, or those who simply want the advantage of a Mapúa education yet reside in far flung areas.

The comprehensive SHS HOME program also provides families opportunities for personalization so they can implement a customized and individualized approach that suits their student’s learning pace and style.

“Mapúa Senior High School HOME (Homeschool: Onboard to Modern day Education) Program provides an alternative way for students to continue their education for them to thrive in their higher education and future careers. We are proud that we are able to expand the reach of Mapúa’s brand of education that is known for excellence, innovation, and rigor via home school, so we can help more Filipino learners excel at one home classroom at a time,” said Mapúa Senior High School Principal Charlotte Monteiro.

Now in its third year, the HOME program has become one of the most preferred SHS home education programs for students who cannot attend traditional face-to-face or blended classes. Unlike other programs offered by other institutions, HOME combines the flexibility and personalized approach with the structure and extensive resources of a traditional school. It follows the comprehensive curriculum used by Mapúa’s blended learning students, ensuring that they receive the same quality of education while having the leeway to tailor their lessons according to each student’s needs and outcomes.

The program also leverages the school network’s online platforms and modular learning so students have ready access to learning materials and pre-recorded lectures which students can stream or download anytime, anywhere.

Unlike other homeschooling programs wherein parents and students are compelled to go through the syllabus and modules by themselves, HOME provides them with strong support systems through regular consultations and extracurricular activities.

Enrolled students are given a HOME coordinator who helps parents and students track and monitor their progress. Students are coached and guided by the coordinator and respective teachers to address potential learning gaps, ensuring that they excel academically throughout the school year.

Students are given a detailed course syllabus, attend fully asynchronous lectures, and have live consultations with the course teachers. All courses have a fixed weekly schedule, and students may attend consultations if they need additional help from a teacher about a topic or requirements. They also have unlimited access to learning materials such as eBooks, video lectures, journals, and the like via the learning management system.

Furthermore, all of these learning resources and tools are included in the tuition fees. Students do not need to purchase additional resources or schoolbooks for each subject as they are all provided upon enrollment. This makes HOME a more affordable option compared to blended modalities, as it significantly reduces financial barriers for students.

For some students, the flexibility that the HOME program affords is a significant advantage. Francis Gabriel Slavin, a Grade 11 STEM student, was able to focus on his competitive golf training through HOME. He performed outstandingly at the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) Interschools Golf Series, a prestigious competition organized by the JGFP with over 500 young golfers from 40 schools. Francis was the sole representative from Mapúa, yet he excelled and finished first in his age group at the Calaraya Springs Golf Tournament and currently holds second place overall in the series.

Programs like HOME empower students to excel academically and allow them to explore and hone their other inclinations and talents from sports, the arts, research, and the like, all while giving them the support system they need.

“The HOME program supports students not only academically but also in terms of emotional and social development by providing access to experienced guidance counselors. Our counselors conduct regular wellness sessions to help students manage stress and foster emotional well-being. Students can schedule individual consultations, ensuring personalized support for their unique needs,” added Ms. Monteiro.
