Teacher Insights: How to have #QualityAirForLife inside your Home?

I’m a very busy girl. One event to another makes me so tired, I don’t have any specific time to rest. But if I have time, spending quality time at home with the family can be the most rewarding feeling anyone can get. With work and school taking up a lot of time outside the house, coming home to your family gives a much needed relief from the daily grind. And this feeling can be enhanced with a healthy environment at home.

However, studies have shown that indoor air quality is not as clean as we think. It may even be worse than outdoor air because contained areas encourage build-up of airborne contaminants, which could pose health risks to you and your family. Household appliances such as stoves and boilers can produce a range of pollutants including nitrogen oxides, which can inflame airways and carbon monoxide that can cause asphyxia.

Allergens are another cause of poor air quality at home. I usually have dust allergies every morning and it can run me throughout the day. Dust mites, molds, and fibers from your fabrics are the common sources. Viruses and bacteria which we might have brought inside our homes can also be trapped and thrive inside your household leading to poor air quality. These elements are what causes our health disruptions and can cause more problems in younger children.

Want to have a healthy air inside your home? Here are some ways on how to better indoor air:

  1. Clean the floors

Floors accumulate dirt and may harbor allergens and bacteria that have entered your home. Vacuuming removes accumulated pollutants while mopping takes care of the dust that are left behind. Also, simply having a doormat lessens the chances of outdoor dirt coming into your home. Personally, I spend too much time putting some deodorizers and mop the floor with detergent to remove dirt and dust. And i rinse the with water with fabric softener for long-lasting scent.

  1. Get some greens

Indoor plants do not only beautify the home but these also help purify the air. Aside from providing oxygen, these greens also absorb toxins. In our home, my mom usually have her plants next to the window to have that garden-scent inside our home. It also create a fresh ambiance inside our home, making the people feel comfortable and at ease.

  1. Find the source of the smell

Our nose tells us when a room is clean. And though lemon, pine, or lavender scents may instantly make your house smell clean, these may only mask the odors. Finding the source of the odor and getting rid of it is vital. As a girl with a very sensitive smell, I know that once a stuff is dirty and stinky, it’s time to throw it. Make space for your nose to smell pleasantly by removing some stinky trash away from your house.

  1. Control humidity

Having a moist environment could encourage growth of dust, mites, and other allergens. A healthy level is in between 30-50%. For enclosed spaces, using an Air Conditioner reduces indoor air moisture while also controlling the presence of allergens.
